16 歲李雪梅的申請函
我出生于中國貴州省龍里縣三元鎮一個邊遠貧困的山區。我名叫李雪梅，我年紀雖小，但已經歷過許多挫折的打擊。幾乎是一波未平一波又起，但在許多老師和同學的鼓勵下，我擺脫了現實的摧殘，對生活仍報著許多美好的憧憬。
I was born in China, Guizhou province, a rural mountain area. My name is Lee Swei Mei. Although I am young in age, I have experienced many of life’s tragedies already. However, through the encouragement of teachers, I am staying optimistic.
我家於2001年3月8日凌晨兩點被一場大火洗劫，我和姐姐差點被火燒死。此後家裡一蹶不振經濟到了崩潰的邊緣。同年7月初母親又突患膽瓤炎；為了挽救危在旦夕的母親，父親不得不四處找親戚朋友借錢。母親醫病用去了一筆不小數目的醫藥費，病情暫時得到了控制，但是經常復發。在母親出院的那天，8月15日我和姐姐都接到了被錄取學校的通知書；姐姐被縣高中錄取，我被黔南州三都民族師範學校錄取。我們姐妹二人捧著通知書沉默了許久，說不出一句話.在經濟最拮据的時刻，比我大一歲的姐姐毅然決定輟學，在家幫助父母，把學習的機會讓給了我和弟弟。雖然我得到了讀書的機會，但家裡吃、穿、住都不能解決，讀書談何容易啊！
My house was burned down on March 18, 2001 in the middle of the night, around 2am. My older sister and I almost died in the house but luckily, we got out in time. Due to the incident, my family went into bankruptcy. The same year in early July, my mom had a gallbladder infection. My dad had to borrow money from relatives to pay for her medical bills. My mom’s illness incurred a large sum of money. Her condition was stabilized but it is a chronic disease. The day my mom was released from the hospital, August 15, 2001, was also the day both my sister and I received our school acceptance letters.
My older sister qualified for Provincial High School. I was accepted into an elementary school teaching program. My sister and I held on to those notices without saying a word. Due to our financial circumstances, my sister who was only a year older, decided to sacrifice her own education for my brother’s and mine. She stayed at home to help the family. Although I received the opportunity to go to school, basic necessities were not covered. There was no way I could attend.
今年1月姐姐不幸患上一種難治之症，這使得家裡更為困難。這無形的擔子壓在父親一人的身上，但父親忍著無形的傷痛把我如期送到了學校，可是我心裡十分的矛盾 …… 父親四處借錢，好不容易湊齊才把我送到了學校。目的就是要我努力學習完成中師學業，將來可以從事小學教育工作。因為我們中師生是未來的小學教師，我們要在未接過小學教育的使命之前，做好充分準備。做到熱愛學生，嚴謹治學，團結合作和將來獻身於小學事業等等的心理準備。將來可以回報家人及社會的關愛，回到家鄉裡的山區從事鄉村小學教育。
This year my sister acquired a terminal illness. This made our financial situation even direr. With all the responsibility lying on my dad’s shoulders, my dad still sent me to school. Nevertheless, I felt bad…My dad borrowed money from everyone he knew so that I could start school. His purpose is for me to complete my courses and be the best teacher I can be. My school is a rigorous program that teaches us how to be good teachers for young children, the future of our country. We learn about teamwork, team building, patience, what we needed to teach and other skills needed to develop young children. I hope to come back to this province and create a better future for the children here.
