準備考察去 (Preparing for Inspection) by 陳則東 Allen Chen
The Enlightening Education Program conducts its bi-annual on-site inspection in the months of March and October. We fly to China to make sure that all the donations are properly used for the construction of schools and all the children who are on scholarships have received their money. We welcome those with compassion to take part in this journey. It is not a vacation; instead it is a meaningful and unforgettable trip of a lifetime. We hope that participants will further understand our work and join our project for the long run. Below is a list of requirements for prospective participants:
Have a compassionate mind
Be free from financial constraints. Volunteers in EEP are self-supported. Each inspection trip costs approximately $2,000.
Free from work or other obligations for a period of 3 weeks. The trip takes about 14-20 days.
Be of excellent health. The trip requires hiking through mountain trails. Weight loss is guaranteed. Please build up stamina before the trip.
Be flexible.
Obtain vaccinations against Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B. Three inoculations are required within 6 months.
Please pack lightly and leave valuables at home. Since we travel in a group and have to squeeze 3-4 people in a small car, it is advisable to carry as little luggage as possible. Do not forget a valid passport with a Chinese visa and money.
Clothing: Gore-Tex windbreaker or raincoat, Fleece jacket, Long underwear, comfortable Gore-Tex shoes, plastic sandals. It is better to bring 2 pieces of light clothing instead of a heavy winter coat. Hidden pockets are very useful.
Medicine: Bring drugs for carsickness, diarrhea, laxatives, vitamins, aspirin, band-aids, antibacterial hand gel, protein drinks, feminine products. Bring only necessities and store in a plastic bag.

Miscellaneous: Small flashlight, camera, sunglasses, small backpack.
Local villagers are simple and honest. They seldom have any contact with outsiders. You may be their first contact outside their village in their entire life. Remember, you are representing EEP. Your actions can affect the fine image built by the organization over the years. Do not take gifts casually. Do not speak loudly. Don’t promise anything you cannot deliver. If you are unable to understand their local dialect, just smile and ask them to speak Mandarin. I hope everyone can join us in visiting this Shangri-La.
