Application Letter From
Cheng Shen Elementary School

Cheng Shen Elementary School is in the southeast corner of the province of Cheng Shen. It is thirty kilometers from the major city. It is supported by the city councils of three towns and serves twenty-five native reservations within the three towns. The total population of the reservations for indigenous people is 2500. During the years of 2000-2003, there were 220 people enrolled in the school. That statistic is double of that in 1992. 90% of the student enrolled is of native aborigine descent. 108 are male, 112 are female.

There are 9 teachers; 1 substitute teacher, 8 full time teachers. There are a total of 7 classes that cover grades 1-6. The Bu Yi tribe is the dominant race. Han (Chinese) and Mui Yi people compose the rest of the student body. The leading source of income in this area is farming, specifically the cultivation of corn. There are no other industries.

The school was established in 1956. It was a private school and has moved four times in the past half century. In 1989, under government support, 5 classrooms were built with wood and cement. Unfortunately, the school has faced extreme difficulties in the last decade, so much so that it has been named a high priority and dangerous site by the local government. Our current problems include:

1. Due to a dramatic increase in students, we do not have enough space to teach. The 6th grade class has had to move into the main office. The first grade class became so large that we had to divide the grade into 2 classes. Due to room constraints, we had to convert one of the teachers’ dormitories into a classroom.

2. The gym area is so small that physical activity is limited.

3. There are 9 teachers who live at the school but there are only 2 dorms. Seven of the teachers share a space of only 18 square meters for both living and working. Two of the teachers are borrowing space at the village councilman’s office. Some others are staying in the school’s records office, library, and activities center due to the recent conversion of dorms to classrooms.

4. The toilet takes up 23 square meters of space. Men and women share one bathroom. There is no privacy. The beam in the bathroom is cracked. Urine leaks in to the schoolyard. There is a horrid smell in the summer. The columns are unstable. The area is very dangerous.

5. The roof is disintegrating. It is very disruptive to the classroom especially on rainy days.

Due to the all the above reason, we are asking for help. I hope you can be of assistance.
