Yueh-kam Fong
![]()
My husband Chang-ching and I had dreamed for many years of going to remote areas of China to help children in need of an education. But we didn’t know how to go about realizing this dream, and moreover, our resources were limited. In the winter of 2000, thanks to Mr. Chien-min Chiou, we met the founder of the Enlightening Education Program, Mr. Howard Chen, and were able to participate in the program. We were both very pleased.
In the spring of 2001, just when we were planning to join the volunteer inspection tour organized by the EEP, my husband fell ill and we could not travel. We thought that surely, if we waited until the fall we would be able to go, but his illness became more severe and we could only keep postponing our plans. In the end, God did not give Chang-ching the opportunity to go, and he carried this regret with him when he left us on December 12, 2003.

Dear Mrs. Fong,

Allen Chen
Every time I enter the remote mountain regions to inspect the progress of the schools sponsored by the Enlightening Education Program, I always bring candy for the attending students. They seldom have any contact with outsiders and run away upon seeing strangers. Candy establishes a rapport between us. When they smile and accept the candy, it builds instant friendship despite our difference in age. Sometimes I have to teach them how to eat the candy. For example, they often do not realize that they must remove the wrapper before putting the candy into their mouths.
Candy is a rarity in this part of the world. When I put candy into these children’s hands, I noticed that their hands are so much different from those of children who’ve grown up in the city; children, who wear nothing but designer clothes, eat McDonald’s and travel during summer and winter vacations. These children’s hands are much rougher, tanned and carry the scent of the earth. Designer clothes, McDonald’s and vacations are beyond the reach of these children who live in the isolated mountain areas.

大 山 裡 的 小 故 事(Tales from Afar) by 董觀壁 Guan Bi Dong
Her name is Long Gan, Miao Tribe, twelve years old, second grade at Wen Xian Elementary School.

(Searching for Instructor Tang) by 鄭 蒂 Dee Cheng
Having spent most of my career in Silicon Valley, I am used to calculating the return on investment as a basis for my decisions. It is my natural line of thinking and it carries over to all aspects of my life, including the non-profit work that I do. I always donate to the biggest schools, with the most people, with the most number of grades or some combination of all three characteristics. When I saw Xian Biao Elementary School on the list of schools that was to receive money, I shunned upon it. If $2700 can build a school that serves 100-200 students, why waste money rebuilding a school that only serves 25 students?

(The Best Thing In the World) by Vincent Lee
I was busy this past summer. Sleeping, eating, TV watching, more sleeping, it was hard balancing time between it all. Then something worthwhile caught my attention. My mom called me over to watch her video from her trip to China.
“Keep an open heart,” she told me amidst my groans, “appreciate what you have, and think about what you can do.”
I watched my mom’s documentary on the poor areas of China. The streets were crowded with little kids. The patter of their feet was loud and clear, they did not know any better; they did not know what school was. They had never tasted meat; electricity was unheard of; so it was only natural that an education was a pipe dream.

(Mini Report from a Rookie Volunteer) by 陸南正 Nanchang Lu
Happily, I was recently placed on the volunteer list to visit several of China’s interior provinces to monitor the new schools program. This would involve reviewing the renovation and construction of schools as well as distributing tuition aid to qualified students. Before leaving, EEP gave us a brief which listed all the dos and don’ts; what things we needed to bring along, tips on appropriate behavior, and a special emphasis on respecting our hosts way of living, regardless of how this may contrast with our own standards.
Initially, we were supposed to have 12 volunteers on this trip, but because of the war with Iraq and the developing SARS epidemic in China, we arrived in Chengdu, Sichuan with only 5 of us reporting for work. Our team leader was forced to regroup and re-plan the entire trip all over again. Here is my mini report of this trip.

How do you do these days? I miss you!

The following letter is the original e-mail message from Jing.
You might find a few ambiguous sentences or grammar mistakes, but I’m sure you’ll get the gist of it. ----Editor
Dear Dee:
I have just today got your mail and am writing at once because sadness is full of my heart.
I am sorry to hear that uncle Chen has gone. I cannot believe that is real. I usually miss him and expect to meet him again.

心意 (From the Grapevine) by 陳國坤 Guo Kun Chen
…… Most of the time we were talking about a friend who had recently passed away.
I did not know Mr. Howard Chen, the founder of the EEP, personally. We’ve spoken less than five sentences to each other. But I have heard a lot about him. The charity work that he has done in the rural area of China and the schools that he has built for those less fortunate, not only influence the children he helped but has also inspired a bulk of my friends to become EEP volunteers.

Allen Chen
Howard left both very fast and unexpectedly. He often said that starting the Enlightening Education Program was his biggest accomplishment. After a decade of hard work, Howard established a model that is still being used.
In the early days, Howard was the sole inspector for every school that was built by EEP. Howard placed every donation in the students’ hand. No matter how hard the route, how far the village, how bumpy the road, he was always happy and willing to travel. He said, “People donated their hard earned money. My method is the dumbest and most tedious but it is also the safest”. To this day, the organization continues to operate with the same methodology.
Every day after work, Howard would read letters and look at photographs sent from students and teachers. That was his best medication. After four major surgeries, he knew it was time to let go of his responsibilities with EEP.

My house is in the Dragon village of the Gui Zhou Province. I am a high school freshman. Attempting to write this self-introduction has brought back many memories of my past and conjured thoughts of my future. I do not know when this suffering will end. I hope that it will come to a halt when I obtain a job and change the depressing landscape of this small town. Nevertheless, for me, that is so far away and only a dream. Why must so many bad things happen? If only someone could understand where I am coming from, I would be happy.

I was born in China, Guizhou province, a rural mountain area. My name is Lee Swei Mei. Although I am young in age, I have experienced many of life’s tragedies already. However, through the encouragement of teachers, I am staying optimistic.

Dear Mr. Hong,
How are you? Let me introduce myself. My name is Liu Hai Chi. I am an outgoing person and like to make jokes. I get along with almost everyone in any situation, be it in school, on the basketball courts or just hanging out. In school, I am the class clown. It is hard to put everything I want to say in this letter. Let me start by giving you a brief summary of my life.

Dear Aunt Su,
How are you? My name is Peng Jing from Southern Secondary High School. I am a high school senior. In the year 2000, I scored a 563 out 600 on my high school placement tests. While attending high school, I thought about applying for scholarships but my family instilled a lot a pride in me and they taught me to be self-sufficient. At that time, I often found myself having to forego breakfast in order to buy a pencil.
Despite my sorry condition, I maintained my pride and completed my sophomore year. I reminded myself of a famous quote by Menfucius: “When heaven is about to give you a big mission, it will make you very tired and hungry”.

Dear Aunt Kao,
How are you? My name is Tang Jialin. I am a high school sophomore. I am one of the kids you sponsor.
My mom contracted an illness that left her paralyzed. When I was 6 years old, my dad was electrocuted and died. What was a happy family disintegrated that year. Our financial situation worsened without my dad. My mom took on the total responsibility of the household. Most of the money was spent on me and my tuition for school. The costs for high school became unbearable. It was at this time that you lent me a helping hand. When my family was in our worst situation, you gave us hope. You gave my mom some room to breathe. Thank you for helping me accomplishes my wish and taking away a portion of my mom’s troubles. I must thank you; however, I am only a student. I suppose I am selfish but the best way to express my thanks is to do my best in school.

Letter From China :

I hope that with this money you can continue to strive for excellence in your academic studies. Hopefully it will be enough to support you and take a burden off of your father. I know that you will continue to work hard and that you will persevere even in your difficult circumstances. The fact that you were number 1 in your class while having to deal with the tough situations in your home is incredible. It is truly amazing that you are so self-motivated in your work.

Dear You lin,
Hi, my name is Jonathan and I am also 15 years old. I live in the California, which is located in the United States of America. I have heard your story about where you live and what kind of situation you are in. From this, I have realized that I am very fortunate to live where I live, in such a wealthy place and in a family with a stable income. I have also come to be thankful for my education and now I think of going to school as a privilege instead of a something I dread everyday. It is amazing how you can do so well in school with all these things going on in your family. From all that I have heard about you, I have decided to contribute some of the money I have to your education. I agree with the fact that working on a farm all day is not the solution to getting out of poverty and that education is the correct way. I sincerely hope that you will be able to succeed in your goal of becoming successful so that you can break out of your family’s current situation.
Yours truly,
Jonathan Weng

Dear Miss Luo,
I am happy to write to you because we are so close in age. I read your application and am deeply touched by how strongly you feel for learning. I do not have much to offer except my monthly allowance from my parents and my best wishes and encouragement. I believe this is a great opportunity for both of us to learn about each other. I am a sophomore in Palo Alto High School. My most favorite subject is Chemistry. I am also taking French, Trigonometry, English, US Government, Business Law. Trigonometry is the most difficult for me, but I am trying my best.
It is outstanding how you are doing very well in school. You are a good example for me to follow for having the drive in schoolwork. I believe that knowledge is the only way to change fate, so I hope the money I donate will help you in your future. Be wise in your spending and keep up in school.
Never give up because you have come so far and achieved a lot! I trust you will do the best with the rest of your life, and contribute to the society. I wish you the best for you and your family. Good luck.

I admire that you have a strong-will and a caring heart for other people. Although to become a teacher takes a lot of hard work and determination, it doesn’t stop you from trying. Your letter is encouraging that I learned not to give up easily.

The Southern Region of the Sichuan Province is where the Red Army once frequented in the days of Mao. It is a poverty stricken community. In 1982, the biggest dam in the region was built to serve the province and surrounding areas. This changed the lives of those who lived in the Southern Region. For most, the quality of life increased. But at the same time, the dam took away twelve plots of land that was at the foot of a hill. Those who once lived there had to relocate further up the hill. This meant having to fertilize barren land.
The young and strong went to other provinces in search of opportunities. They were unwilling to come back, leaving the old and weak. Life was hard. Because these families were unable to pay tuition, many children were shunned from school.
As a result, school buildings and education became a low priority. The schools were old and decrepit. Many of the rooms were irregular. Class schedules did not exist. Sometimes students would have a makeshift class on the hills. Who can give their future hope?

我們的康福小學(The Conford School ) by 余靜之
I found out about the Enlightening Education Program by luck, while reading an article in the World Journal Weekly in August of 1998. The piece provided an in depth report on the education crisis in China and the support that EEP had provided to children who would otherwise be unable to attend school. I was appalled that such a situation could occur in this day and age. The comprehensive reporting touched me and I remember tears rolling down my face as I was reading. While I was in a privileged situation, so many others were not as blessed. Children in China had to fight for their “right” to an education. They are plagued by poor conditions and a horrible environment yet they struggle through it everyday.
In the past, I had wanted to donate to an education program in China but could not find a reliable charity. Now I found one that I could trust. My mom was living with me at the time. Both of us wrote a check and sent it off in the mail. At the same time, I telephoned one of the founders, Howard Chen, and discussed the goals and background of his organization. This was my first encounter with EEP.
