Letters to China
Dear Meng Haiyong,

Hello! How are you? I would first like to commend you on your hard work and excellent grades. But I would also like to tell you some things about myself since I don’t think the Enlightening Foundation gave you any information about me.

My name is Julie Shi. My Chinese name is 石修慧. I am 18 years old and I am Chinese, but I unfortunately cannot read or write Chinese, so I apologize for the inconvenience. I’ve always stressed the importance of education and so when I was given the opportunity to support someone through school, I was happy to. In August I am attending college, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), to study chemical engineering. I hope I can support you through college also, if you plan on attending college.

I live in Milford, Pennsylvania. It is a nice small town, and rather pretty. I live with my parents and my two sisters and my little brother. My sister will finish high school next year and my other sister is in middle school. My little brother is going to start elementary school in August. I am sorry about your situation and I hope your mother will become healthier soon.

I am happy that you study hard. Your hard work will pay off some day and I’m sure your family is very proud of you. I am going to study Chinese in college and so hopefully I will be able to write to you in Chinese. Some of the things I enjoy is reading and other miscellaneous activities, but I often spend my time working at my mother’s restaurant, which I find to be quite boring. But that’s okay, because I am at least helping out my family. Some of the money I earn I use to support you through school, so I am happy and content.

I hope to keep in touch and continue your hard work. Kudos!

Sincerely,
  Julie Shi
