School Inspections
Volunteers from Ampro Co.
First of all, I would like to thank the Enlightenment Foundation for giving us the opportunity to participate in the volunteer activities.
We have gained an insight on the children living in remote areas through this inspection. We have also realized how different their lives are compared to ours. These children have no alternatives in life have touched and enlightened us deep in our hearts.
We were able to relate to the adverse geological environment of the inspected areas through four of our compassionate colleagues and understood how difficult it was for these children to commute to and from school in these areas.
During the inspection, it was difficult to travel from one elementary school to another as the roads were rather bumpy.
Due to heavy rain the previous night, some colleagues conducting inspections in Ningqiang, Shanxi could not access the ordinary vessels to cross the elevated river. Instead, they had to hire motor boat to reach the opposite shore. After they reached the opposite shore, they had to climb the hill and walk mountain roads along the railway for about 40 minutes before reaching the Ampro Hope Elementary School which we funded.
The journey in Guizhou being more difficult on foot, the inspecting colleagues were forced to travel from one elementary school to another by car. Only those with excellent driving skills and those who are familiar with the roads are qualified to drive on such rugged and rough road. Meanwhile, not all cars are suited to drive on these roads. It is no wonder that our request to drive ourselves was denied.
A colleague at the inspection said that although the road ahead could not be seen at all in the car, no one dared to look sideways. Acrophobes should simply refrain from peering over the cliffside. My colleague was not the “carsick” type of guy, but even he experienced dizziness and nausea on the bumpy ride!
Moreover, as it was impossible for the driver to traverse certain areas, the only thing he could do was to drive to whatever place he could. After getting out of the car, they had to climb a mountain and walk a long way to reach the final destination. These mountains are Nature’s masterpieces. They are steep and difficult to climb unlike Nanshan (South Mountain) with steps situated in Shenzhen which we frequently climbed. One simply cannot complete the journey unless one is in good physical health. Therefore, “getting in shape” is a must before we conduct an inspection there again.
It takes more than two hours to walk by mountain roads from home to school for the children and more than four hours back and forth. Obviously, life in the mountains is difficult unlike in the city where kids go to school by car on flat roads. It is difficult for city kids to understand the hardships experienced by the kids living in these areas.
This is the current condition of the school after being rebuilt. Prior to that, the conditions were worse. Before the elementary school was rebuilt, it used to take the children four hours to go to school and eight hours back and forth. It was simply impossible for them to go to school.
As the saying goes, “Building roads is the first step to acquiring wealth.” Such bad traveling conditions have caused these places to be even more impoverished. The only solution is for the children to go to school so that they will be able to leave the mountains someday and turn the situation around in their favor with collaborated efforts. We have gained an insight into the kids and school there through inspection reports prepared by our colleagues.
Fourteen elementary schools in Ningqiang, Shanxi have been inspected. A school normally accommodates 80-100 students (grade 1 to grade 4). Teachers are also limited in number. All the curriculums in the same grade are usually handled by a single teacher. Also, there are no English teachers。
Although the country requires English classes be taken from the third grade on, the kids are not given the opportunity to learn it. In spite of that, they are content with what they already have. Should the city kids not appreciate this privilege that they have?
Teachers are also not paid very well. In Ningqiang, Shanxi’s teachers are only paid 200 RMB per month, and the teachers at the inspected schools in Guizhou are paid even less, only 82 RMB a month. How can a person maintain livelihood with just 82 RMB in the city? We cannot help but ponder over this issue.
As commuting by mountain road is time-consuming, classes start at 10AM and end at 3PM. Very few kids can afford lunch, most of the children do not eat or drink anything during the time they are at school. Just the thought of their difficult way of life would make most of us cry. Nevertheless, they enjoy the simplicity and believe that being able to go to school is a blessing. Shenzhen is indeed a paradise if we compare our way of life to theirs.
Why should these children live so painfully? Each one of us must lovingly help them if we can. Their teachers, of course, are no exception。
The colleagues who inspected Guizhou said that rice was not a part of the diet, as it took 2 to 3 hours to buy rice and 4 to 5 hours back and forth by mountain road. Therefore, they do not usually have rice, what most of us consider a staple in the Chinese diet. They only went the distance to buy rice upon our visit.
Vegetables and meat are scarce here. Life here is no comparison to life in the city where vegetables and meat are served as part of every meal. Should we not treasure our way of life even more? We salute teachers’ earnestness to teach despite the impoverished conditions they face. Anyone who is capable in this world is really obligated to help.
This inspection also helped us gain a more profound understanding of the Enlightenment Foundation. We believe we have made the right choice in being a part of this organization. Donations are carefully spent and stringently managed at Enlightenment Foundation.
The donations are allocated where it is most needed. We would like to extend our gratitude to the organization that we have faith in and trust. Our company shall engage in other annual donation programs in the future。
We hope to reach out to more people with these programs. Through this inspection, we realized the difficulties faced by children in remote areas and understood the need to care for poor children.
We have also learned to treasure and be grateful for what we are given. We will continue to do whatever we can to help these children, so they no longer have to experience hardships in life. We also pray that everyone in the world with the ability to help does so to improve their situation and make this world a better place where love prevails.
